The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter originally signed on 26 June 1945 in San Francisco and has only been amended three times in 1963, 1965 and 1973.  This was the culmination of the United Nations Conference on International Organization and the Charter came into force on 24 October 1945.

Since the UN’s creation it has evolved to keep pace with an ever changing world, but it fundamentally strives to be a place on earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.

Countries and States are admitted to membership in the United Nations by a decision of the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
